Language: | English | Title: | The concept of multi-domain operations in the light of the challenges of the Slovenian Armed Forces' communications and information system | Abstract: | The article critically examines the challenges and perspectives of the development of the Communications and Information System (CIS) in the spirit of NATO’s multi-domain operations concept, with a particular focus on the Slovenian Armed Forces. It highlights how NATO, in order to maintain its advantages in a complex security environment, is intensively developing the concept of multi-domain operations, which includes the synchronized use of all operational domains (land, air, sea, space and cyberspace). Cooperation with external stakeholders plays a key role in this process, allowing the Alliance to have faster access to new technologies and information. In this context, the Slovenian Armed Forces are faced with the need to develop the CIS which will enable smooth operations in a multi-domain environment, in line with NATO standards and guidelines. The new CIS, to be fully implemented by 2025, will allow for greater flexibility, security and connectivity between Slovenian Armed Forces’ units, while supporting cooperation with allies within the Alliance. The implementation of the CIS requires not only technological improvements, but also an adaptation of the organizational mindset and training of the personnel who will use the new systems. Despite current challenges such as security policy coordination, staffing and overcoming technological constraints, the Slovenian Armed Forces are showing promising results in the development of the CIS, which will be crucial to the support of multi-domain operations in the future. | Keywords: | communications and information system, multi-domain operation, technological improvements, federated mission networking |
