Abstract:Diplomska naloga opisuje orožje za osebno obrambo, kategorijo orožja, ki je primarno namenjeno vojakom, katerih primarna naloga ni uporaba lahkega pehotnega orožja - pušk.

Abstract:Diploma paper describes personal defense weapons (PDW), type of weapon primarily intended for soldiers whose primary mission does not include the use of basic infantry weapon – the rifle. The first part of the paper describes development of the weapons through history, from the time of World War I and World War II to the Cold War. Second part of the paper describes the requirements developed for the PDWs in the 1990’s, specifically by the NATO. The paper also presents the solutions and concepts, used by the designers in constructing the PDWs, and the role of the weapons in NATO and in other world’s militaries. The last part of the paper focuses on possible criteria for selection of PDWs and analyses reasons why such weapons are not as widespread as originally envisaged at the beginning of their development.
Keywords:NATO, personal defense weapons, pistol, handgun, rifle, machinegun, cartridge, caliber, carbine, effective range, stopping power, magazine, barrel
