Language:EnglishAbstract:The United Nations is an international organization that has a universal character and today counts 193 members. Its basic mission is to maintain international peace and security, most often this reflects through the peacekeeping operations on all parts of the world. Approval of those operations is in the exclusive competence of the Security Council. In the last period, which is marked by changed security situation in the world, his responding was often too slow. The reason for that lies in the fact, that the Security Council does not reflect the actual relationships and real balance of power in the today's world. Proposals for the reforms are coming from different sides, but readiness to except those reforms, especially on the sideof the permanent (privileged) States of the Security Council, is very low. What is the United Nations and Security Council's response to the changed situation after the fall of the Berlin Wall, if any, is the topic of this diploma thesis. Keywords:United Nations, security council, reforms, peace operations
